Salt stains plague the entrances of many buildings this time of year. They can be some of the most difficult stains to remove because of the amount of water needed to dissolve and flush the salt away.
If you are feeling adventurous and would like to try and tackle the job yourself you will need a few things:
- Rug Doctor or other carpet cleaning machine
- White distilled vinegar
- Lots and lots of water
- Brush to agitate the carpet
- Pump up sprayer
- Large fans or air movers
Vacuum the carpet thoroughly. This process is much easier if you can remove as much as possible with a vacuum first.
Mix a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water.
With the pump up sprayer spray the vinegar and water solution onto the salt stain. Don’t be stingy you will need a lot to break up and dissolve the salt.
Agitate the carpet with a push broom to get the vinegar to penetrate into the carpet
Let dwell for 10 to 15 minutes
With cold water fill the Rug Doctor and rinse the carpet. There will still be salt in the carpet even after the salt appears to be gone so keep rinsing
When you are confident, you have removed all the rock salt go back over the area 3 to 4 times with only dry passes. The dry passes will help remove as much of the excess moisture as possible
Place large fans or air mover to blow over the wet carpet to speed drying
If salt stains remain repeat this procedure until the salt is gone
